Happiness

The Harvard Happiness Study is a long-term research project that began in the late 1960s.

The research looks at the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of adult development and aging to understand the predictors of happiness and well-being better. The study discovered that solid relationships, participation in activities that provide a sense of purpose, and the ability to adapt to stress and adversity are the key factors that contribute to happiness and well-being in life. Furthermore, the study found that physical health and close relationships are the strongest predictors of overall life satisfaction in old age. Overall, the Harvard Happiness Study provides valuable insights into the factors that contribute to a fulfilling and satisfying life, as well as emphasizing the significance of happiness. People are social beings. We cannot provide everything we require for ourselves as individuals. We require the interaction and assistance of others.

There are 7 keystones of support in our interpersonal lives:

Security and safety: Who would you call if you woke up in the middle of the night, terrified? In a time of crisis, who would you turn to?

Development and learning: Who inspires you to try new things, take risks, and pursue your life's ambitions?

Emotional closeness and trust: Who knows everything (or nearly everything) about you? When you're feeling down, who can you talk to and be honest about how you're feeling?

Identity affirmation and shared experience: Do you have anyone in your life who has shared many experiences with you and helps you strengthen your sense of self?

Romantic intimacy: Are you happy with the amount of romantic intimacy you have in your life?

Help (both informational and practical): To whom do you turn if you require expertise or assistance in solving a practical problem? (e.g., planting a tree, or fixing your WiFi connection).

Having fun and relaxing: Who is it that makes you laugh? Who do you invite to a movie or a road trip who makes you feel connected and at ease?

Don't be afraid to engage with the individuals in your life. It's never too late to deepen the connections that matter to you, whether it's a thoughtful question or a moment of devoted attention.
